3 Nearby Hiking Trails You Can Experience Year-Round

No matter the time of year, hiking can be a great way to spend time outside. If this sounds like a fun activity, there are several nearby hiking trails for your enjoyment. In fact, the best trails near Woodbridge include:

Lake Katherine Trail

Nestled along the Calumet-Sag Channel, the Lake Katherine Nature Center comes complete with a stunning arboretum, a waterfall garden, and expansive views from atop a ridge.

Its hiking trail is popular for offering one of the best urban nature walks in the area. Throughout, hikers see an array of flowers and shrubs meant to attract birds. Most of the trails are wood chip which makes for a comfortable walking surface.

Fun fact: More than 100,000 people visit Lake Katherine every year to explore the outdoors!

Springbrook Prairie Trail

Spanning 5.5 miles within the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, this trail meanders through one of the most regionally significant grassland bird communities in Illinois. As the path twist and turns, hikers will see an array of birds such as short-eared owls, meadowlarks, and northern harriers (a state-endangered species).

The preserve is open daily until one hour after sunset. Also, leashed dogs are welcome to join their owners for an afternoon of fun.

McKinley Woods Forest Preserve

McKinley Woods features diverse habitats including wetland, forest, and prairie. It’s situated where the Des Plaines, DuPage, and Kankakee Rivers meet to form the Illinois River, and the preserve provides both a scenic and peaceful place to take a hike.

Surrounded by towering blue ash and chinquapin oak trees, the trail stretches more than two miles and is home to birds such as bald eagles and purple martins.
